The Joy Of Reading

There really is nothing quite like the joy of a good book. A good book, in my opinion, is anything that is thought-provoking, enriches my life, utilizes my imagination, and—of course—doesn’t waste my time (that means flash fiction is out!). And when I say it brings me joy, I mean the kind of joy that is refreshing; the simplicity of living thousands of lives from many authors, without leaving my chair and while enjoying my morning coffee.

Sarah Clarkson wrote, “Literature is humanity's ongoing conversation with itself about what it means to be human, to be good, to live with meaning.” My bookshelves hold books from different decades, written by authors from a variety of backgrounds, and are organized by several different genres. I can pull Lord of the Rings, theology books, Francis Schaffer, or a historical fiction novel off the shelf, and though all are very different, each one would talk to me about “what it means to be human, to be good, to live with meaning,” as Sarah said.

A few years ago, I started sharing pictures on social media of books I had finished reading with a short review. I did this for two reasons: First, to share my excitement as I was getting back to the habit (and joy!) of reading after several years without making it a priority, and second was simply to keep me accountable (and perhaps to brag a bit?). One of the things I did not expect was the amount of people who began messaging me to ask my opinion about different books or even to ask for book recommendations from me. Since this is something I could spend all day doing, my next blog project was born.

Reading adds joy to my life, but also value, knowledge, wisdom, and enrichment, to name a few. I want to add this to your life, too! So, I’ve curated book lists for different genres and different types of readers. Here’s a sampling of what will be coming soon:

I can’t wait to share these book lists (and many more that I’m still researching for!) As I publish them, be sure to share with your friends and family who might be interested. Comment below to let me know which list you’re most excited for—or book lists you think I should share!

The word adorn means “to enhance the appearance of, especially with beautiful objects.” Titus not only teaches that believers can adorn truth, it tells how! Fulfilling your purpose and mission, impacting the world with the gospel—that’s what this study of Titus will help you do.
